The change is part of a broader effort by US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to replace its paper-heavy system with digital processing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The shift could make applications faster and easier to track. But it also means applicants who have traditionally relied on paper forms will have to adapt to a much more digital immigration process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Paperwork Is Giving Way to Digital Accounts<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the new rule, immigration forms that have already been available for electronic filing for at least <strong>180 days<\/strong> can be required to be submitted online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">USCIS can also make additional forms online-only, but applicants must receive at least <strong>60 days&#8217; notice<\/strong> before that requirement takes effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most applicants will use a USCIS online account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They will generally have two ways to submit their information: completing the form directly online or uploading a PDF of the completed form together with supporting documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That represents a major change for applicants accustomed to printing forms, gathering physical documents and mailing thick application packages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Green Cards and Citizenship Are Among the Applications Affected<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The policy could touch some of the most important immigration processes in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the applications potentially covered are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Green card applications and renewals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Family-based immigration petitions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>US citizenship applications<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Asylum claims<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Employment authorisation applications<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Temporary Protected Status filings<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For applicants, the practical message is simple: <strong>having access to a reliable online account and knowing how to submit digital documents could become just as important as completing the immigration form correctly.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why Is the US Making the Change?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">USCIS says the move is about more than convenience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agency wants to reduce its dependence on paper processing and the Treasury Department&#8217;s <strong>lockbox system<\/strong>, which handles applications submitted by mail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The scale of that operation is enormous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During fiscal year 2025, USCIS processed more than <strong>14 million benefit requests<\/strong>, while lockbox facilities handled roughly <strong>453 million pages of paper submissions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That volume creates a significant administrative burden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every paper application can require manual handling, data entry, scanning, storage and transportation. Moving more of that work online could allow USCIS to process information electronically from the beginning rather than converting paper documents into digital records later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Government Says Digital Filing Could Strengthen Security<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The change is also being presented as a security measure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">USCIS says electronic filing can make immigration information easier to access and analyse, potentially improving <strong>fraud detection and security screening<\/strong> while reducing errors caused by manual data entry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is an important part of the policy&#8217;s broader significance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The US immigration system is not simply trying to become paperless. It also spent more than <strong>$10 million on postage alone<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Department of Homeland Security expects mandatory electronic filing to reduce expenses associated with manual handling, data entry, shipping, storage and scanning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the transition works as intended, some of those savings could come from eliminating repetitive administrative tasks before an application even reaches an officer for adjudication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Happens to People Who Cannot File Online?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is one of the most important safeguards in the new system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Applicants who are unable to file electronically can request an exemption from USCIS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those requests will be considered <strong>case by case<\/strong>, rather than automatically granting every applicant an exemption.
